Janice Mascarenhas
Dandara

Janice Mascarenhas is a Brazilian hairstylist and visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice, encompassing installation, performance, and photography, extends far beyond an aesthetic experience. Through diverse artistic forms, she conveys to the audience an exploration that merges anthropological and sociological perspectives.  Inspired by the Afro-Brazilian religion, Candomblé, rooted in Bahia and shaped by Yoruba, Fon, and Bantu traditions. In this sense, her practice is not only about revisiting ancestral knowledge but also about reimagining its forms in the present as acts of visibility, affirmation, survival, and vehicles of cultural transmission. Mascarenhas’s sculptural and photographic creations are not only expressions of Black women’s empowerment but also material embodiments of resilience and cultural ancestry.

Matthieu Martin (1986) grew up in Bayeux, Normandy, and graduated from the École Supérieure d’Arts et Médias (ésam), Caen, in 2011. In 2023, he completed a practice-based PhD exploring the presence of artworks in public spaces and their interaction with local communities. This research, ‘Towards an Art of Common Space? From Drop Sculpture to Collaborative Installation’, his understanding of the urban environment shifts his focus from mere artistic production to a broader consideration of the ecosystem surrounding artworks and their relationship to the public.

Principle of Precaution is an ongoing drawing series that catalogues various protection devices placed in front of artworks in institutional spaces, museums, galleries, art fairs, and beyond. Using a minimalist approach, the drawings consist solely of lines, whose thickness varies to distinguish architectural volumes from protective devices. The artworks themselves are removed, leaving abstract exhibition spaces saturated with disciplinary signs increasingly encroaching on public space.

Lee Sanghyeok (1986) is a Korean designer and artist based in Berlin. He reinterprets the relationship between objects and space, drawing on diverse spatial experiences to explore human behaviour and everyday rituals. His designs transform functional objects into meaningful, sensory elements that invite reflection, blending art and design to create immersive, contemplative environments. Alongside his own collections, Lee develops projects ranging from unique furniture commissions to large- scale installations and public artworks.

ARC emerged from this practice of drawing imaginary lines to connect the elements of a space. It reflects my journey from prototype to finished design, considering form, function,
and expression. Each decision was revisited and reimagined from fresh perspectives, building the final piece layer by layer. Following the lines of ARC reveals hidden connections that invite personal interpretations of space. It creates new spatial experiences, offering another dimension that expands through objects.

BETWEEN THEIR EYES
Article Series

As a farewell to our previous exhibition, Between the Skin, and in anticipation of our upcoming show, KÜSSE Berlin presents Between Their Eyes, a series of four interview articles with Karlotta Susanna Pöschko, Amelie Luca Staudhammer, Lison Tureau Pézery, and Inga Wójcik.

Through these texts, we delve into the delicate universe of Karlotta Susanna Pöschko, where vulnerability and softness emerge in every brushstroke. Extending beyond the physical gallery, the series offers an intimate exploration of the portraits: the models themselves speak, their voices intertwining with the artist’s, opening new perspectives and deepening the aesthetic encounter. Readers are invited to discover how dialogue, emotion, and collaboration weave an interconnected artistic world. Presented in September as a Meta-Exhibition (a blend of moodboard and mind map), Between Their Eyes expands Between the Skin beyond conventional frameworks, creating a sensitive and expanded exhibition experience.
